Brace yourselves yoga lovers, the best day of the year is coming up. That’s right, International Day of Yoga is June 21! Whether you can’t live a day without a yoga class or you are just starting to learn, International Day of Yoga is a great day to come together with those around you and see what yoga is all about (and we know you won’t be disappointed). We promise you it’s going to be the least stressful day of the year if you celebrate how we do, so let’s dive in!

  1. Start Your Day Off with Deep Breathing and Reflecting

There’s no better way to start your day than with a clear, open mind. Lucky for you, yoga is all about calming and centering the mind. Taking deep breaths slows down your heart rate, making it a great way to reduce anxiety and relax your body overall.

One way you can practice this is through deep belly breathing. This helps your lungs expand and give you a full oxygen exchange by focusing on the movement of your diaphragm.

Start by laying on your back or sitting in a chair. Place one hand on your chest while the other hand rests right below your rib cage. This will help you focus on engaging your diaphragm. Breathe in through your nose for five seconds and focus on the hand on your stomach raising up. Next, tighten your abdominals and exhale out of your mouth for five seconds, focusing on your stomach lowering. Repeat this process for five to ten minutes.

This exercise is an easy way to start your day right!

  2. Try Out a New Yoga Class

This one may seem obvious, but there’s really nothing better than celebrating International Day of Yoga then with a yoga class! Don’t worry, we’ll add a twist for you. If you usually stick to a specific class at your yoga studio, get out of your comfort zone and try something new. You never know, maybe you’ll find your new thing! Used to your normal Vinyasa flow? Try Bikram Yoga, a style of hot yoga. We promise it’s not as difficult as it sounds (it’s only a little sweaty)!

If you don’t go to yoga classes regularly or don’t have access to one near you, don’t fret, you don’t even have to leave your house for this one! Creators on YouTube such as Yoga with Adriene and Yoga with Kassandra have free classes on their channels just a click away. These classes are for all levels and are super easy to follow along with. Everyone starts somewhere and we would love to see you start your journey! And if you do decide to start your yoga journey, then do we have some clothes for you...

  3. Find a New Location

Who said yoga has to be done inside a studio? Go embrace your surroundings and bring your mat to your favorite outdoor place! Whether it’s to the beach, your local park, or even just in your front yard, the possibilities are endless for where you can do yoga. This day is all about reflecting on not only yourself, but finding gratitude in your surroundings. Take this time to enjoy the outdoors and think about the beauty around you.

Don't want to spend so much time reflecting on your life? We get that. Find some friends to take with you on your excursion and turn it into a fun night! Prepare some food, bring along some cards, the possibilities are endless. Imagine this. You’re in your favorite place, with your favorite people, following along to your favorite yoga class. You think the fun is over as soon as the class ends, when your friend pulls out your favorite meal, pours you a glass of wine, and hands you a deck of cards. I know, we’re tearing up just thinking about it. Yoga is all about making connections not only with yourself, but those around you. Who said the night had to stop on the yoga mat?

Now this might just be me, but yoga outside sounds like the perfect opportunity for a picture. That being said, a little birdy told me if you take a picture of you doing yoga outside and tag us @Electricyoga on Instagram you maybe, just maybe will get featured on our story. Guess you won’t know until you try!
